Antofagasta, a city and commune in northern Chile, is known as the "Pearl of the North". Its origin has different theories, being renamed in 1870 by Manuel Mariano Melgarejo. It has developed its tourist offer, highlighting attractions such as the La Portada Natural Monument, A Chimba National Reserve, Goal to the Tropic of Capricorn and the Hand of the Desert sculpture. Llullaillaco National Park, 275 km away, is home to volcanoes and rich fauna. Antofagasta also has beaches, including some artificially built on the coast.
